Booklet Design comps

Posted by Taylor Bernard on April 6, 2015

here's comparing the two bg's. one normal color using guidelines spec'd in ktm manual. other using 'selective color' style used in duke booklet.
the duke booklet one is very well done. my guess is that they are going in and roughly doing it like i did, then going back with a wacom and cleaning up all the lines and stuff with a tablet. its to precise to be click click done in a filter or technique.

Taylor Bernard on April 6, 2015:

also that duke photo looks a lot more 'busy' because of the super high contrast bg. the musquin shot i grabbed had a sky and mountain bg with no contrast in sky or anything. i think this is where they are composting the shot a lot in the duke photo. so its very busy with a lot of noise and the like.

heres a diff image with a bit more compositing

Justin Bernard on April 7, 2015:

the dungey one looks insane good

thats the ticket, finding stuff with a more rich overall composure

was the dungey one a composite you made or found image like that with the clouds?

Taylor Bernard on April 7, 2015:

thx. dungey one is cloud comp in bg. with some foreground fx too

here's what the laser looks like on anodized hardcoat:

Justin Bernard on April 8, 2015:

looks good.  shoot me font on this so i can tweak something.  tradegothic i think

Taylor Bernard on April 8, 2015:

you dont have tradegothic? i dont think i dl'ed it so must have gotten it from your font bank a long time ago.

Taylor Bernard on April 8, 2015:

Taylor Bernard on April 8, 2015:

i tried to open a ktm pdf in illus to pull some art and they were using trade gothic but using a diff naming system, so it was screwing things up and showing not found. it was like trade gothic condendsed bold no. 20, and they had it named 'trade gothic CondBold-20' and was messing everything up

Justin Bernard on April 8, 2015:

i have it but it wasnt mapping, prob diff variety

this one works, thx

best looking thing ive found so far are these thick gate open style rings.
trying to find a stateside distributor for them.

Justin Bernard on April 13, 2015:

where my vector template is?

Taylor Bernard on April 13, 2015:

Justin Bernard on April 14, 2015:

know what this font is?

Taylor Bernard on April 14, 2015:

i think its that 'starship' or whatever lowercase. the
'2014' is the same as the font we did on our cover.

theres a lot of dark grey pictures in the hard ano section. just showing what it COULD possibly end up like. it COULD be straight black and couldnt tell it from the Type II cosmetic ano, but theres a chance it will come out lighter. the type II is pretty much guaranteed to come out dark black.

Justin Bernard on April 14, 2015:

cool

honestly depends more on cost (and more so on time to do it) than anything
sort that aspect out

thx

hey, pass me the psd you have to make this stuff:

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

let me know in morning if ano guy doesn't get the cut alum in morning (i'lll be working on wrapping up book interior page design all day)

how are we going to spec color?  can we go dark grey instead of black?  he have color chips/etc?

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

doing normal anodizing. gonna be pitch black.

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

they have color options, or is normal ano just like red/blue/blk?

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

can do any color you want.

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

dey gots da dark grey?  you know the color your cases are?  maybe something like that?

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

yeh he'd do it in black tank and pull it early. just find exact color you want and he can get as close as he can to it

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

cool.  find us a dark grey color off an actual ktm part/case/frame/etc we can get somewhat close to in the morning to pass to him?  not worried about a perfect match or anything of course, just kinda 'similar-ish

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

only grey factory color that i can think ktm does is on musqins ignition cover.
but this is to light isnt it

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

weird, i thought they were all dark, like this ign cover?

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

(thats more the shade i was thinking, what you think?)

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

yeh thats just dark black, its just plastic so it kinda looks matte. but its the light that make it look lighter

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

let me know on this color. guys should be getting parts soon at ano.
here's that black plastic color

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

Works for me

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

which one looks the closest

Justin Bernard on April 17, 2015:

top or bottom maybe?

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

just saw this on our laser etcher guy's page:

he has a badass laser that can make multiple passes for added depth.

what you think about that effect on ours? or go with just a light surface etch like this:

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

current bg rider comps + ashphalt and dirt bg's

http://transfer.fleeangrybear.com/KTM_BG_Comps.zip

Taylor Bernard on April 17, 2015:

front/back covers lasered and ano'd.
he just asked to let him know if its ok to proceed. i THINK these may be test runs.  if they are, do you want to stay this color or go darker.

also, i zoomed in on the star on the back and its a little messy. i think that the lines are straight and its the blowout from the laser on the backside. we should be able to break them off i think and lightly file it down? i dont think the shape is distorted. lets hope not.

Justin Bernard on April 18, 2015:

you tell him to go darker if he can?

Justin Bernard on April 18, 2015:

and the background composites look super super clean, great work. only one that seems off is musquin one, its not as similar as the dungey/etc ones, maybe because it was first.  maybe if you have a big cloud bg add that in?

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

those above pictures arent even COATED yet. those are raw alum.
he sent the pic for proof of what they got from laser cutter.

the lighting angle is reflecting and making it look dark grey on the cover.

they are in the bath right now, should be done sub 2hrs. will send another picture when they are done.

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Dang

Perfect

Get on the printer now
Thx

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

lets kill the musquin bg comp. its to boring bg image, the ones that work the best are the high contrast bg with roads, mountains, rocks, ect. else bike/rider looks like its floating.

heres a freeride one.

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

nice. thx.

sounds like printer is taken care of,  just make sure laser ships/overnights today. then work on making a few more composite plates like youve been doing.  thx

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

one other small detail, i need something i can use as a circular sort of icon, see if can make me a sprocket or disc vector

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

heres out of the bath

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

clean

def not super dark but should look pretty nice

on street 2, can you get the asphalt area way darker, just pretty hot compared to the others with overlay copy/etc

thx

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

thx, should be all good now

hit up those rings so can morning ship

thx

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

hey actually same thing on that one, bump the bg up way more dark

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

you sure? treeline and the tunnel entrance are almost straight black. didnt want to make it to dark.

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

true

dont do global darker then, maybe bottom right 1/3?  sort of  a grad shadow wash maybe

just making sure i have some solid contrast to lay on top of

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Taylor Bernard on April 20, 2015:

Justin Bernard on April 20, 2015:

man alive that last mx one is crazy nice.

all good on images, no more needs, may have a specific one tomorrow, will have to see
thx

Justin Bernard on April 21, 2015:

trying to match the attached layout, 500x500 each, greyscale, similar tone

Justin Bernard on April 21, 2015:

edit these peoples pics for me

crop/scale to size, grey scale, tonal adjust

Taylor Bernard on April 21, 2015:

yeh matches good i think.
gotta get rid of that italic font. no point putting it in center of a center if its off center no matter what visually

Justin Bernard on April 21, 2015:

no no, meant the pics i posted right after, matching them to the profile pics i already did

thx

Taylor Bernard on April 21, 2015:

Justin Bernard on April 21, 2015:

also need logos for:

Prana, Marmot, Sun and Ski, Exofficio.  Fit Socks, parts unlimited

(i think you already have some of these from old mann deck)

Taylor Bernard on April 21, 2015:

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

actually looks really good. i told him to go go go.
says the ano is a bit weird. taking longer per sheet than usually around 5min

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

looks great!

get them coming...

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

may be in good gesture to kick this guy some extra $$ for this. he originally thought that it would take 30sec-2min per plate to do and could knock them out quicker. he says every once in a while this weird any shows up where it takes more passes to burn thru. pretty much eating this guys day up when got quoted for half a day.
think about what would be fair to do.

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

concerened with him getting them out the door on time?

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

dunno. he said backs SHOULD be a bit faster due to less area.
im going to call him in sub hr and see how many he's gotten done and do some #'s.

he charges like 30$ to slap a logo on an AR receiver. so when he quoted us 150 for 40 booklets you can see that when its looking like taking a whole day will make him loose $.

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

its already 1245 there....

if the depth thing is taking too long, get him to do it shallow etch to save time

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

i dont even think thats the issue. he said the issue was the ano. he said every no and then he gets a batch in where it doesnt want to cut thru the surface layer. first few passes leave a weird residue. so he has to make more passes at a stronger strength to punch thru.

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

do you know the shipping cutoff times over there?

if it gets too close, may need to get him to ship partial/etc

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

post 4pm online still showing same deliv time

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

i may get him to mail them to a friend in orange county house if it gets close. i didnt think about that till just now. then it wont be as expensive to mail, also i wont have to fly with them.  just keep updated on progresss/how long its taking.  if it gets close, may do that instead.

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

yeh thats an idea. could collate books over there and ziptie together. then just sandwich tops and screw on rings in CA

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

yep

lets make that call when see when he is done. tell him dont ship till verifiy best place to send

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

Justin Bernard on April 22, 2015:

thx

can you send me the exact vector file you used for the laser, i want to overlay it on my psd and make sure the circles for hole punching match

also to make sure its 3/8"

thx

Taylor Bernard on April 22, 2015:

i took your mockup.ai file and stripped all the unncessary stuff out. sent him this:
